4 Firefox Extensions I use every day for web development

March 13th, 2008 - Posted in Products |

With the release of Firefox 3, which according to ZDnet: Firefox 3 Beta 4 is 5x faster than IE7, 3x faster than FF2 right around the corner, I can see a huge move towards the Firefox browser. I use Firefox all the time, which is actually very bad from a developer standpoint. It is not smart to develop a website, then fix all the IE 6/7 errors, but many web designers do it.

mozilla firefox 3 beta faster then IE7

That is a huge difference, and to be honest, I find the results hard to believe. Another thing is IE6 is not listed, and as of this writing IE6 is installed on more computers then IE7 according to w3schools.com.

IE6: 30.7%
IE7: 22%
FF: 36.5%

Below is a list of my top development add-ons.

  1. Web Developer Toolbar - I use this the most, especially for the CSS tools. You can edit CSS directly on the webpage you are looking at. It does not save the changes but you can find issues easily. You can view cookie info, and other stored data. View Metadata is good for when you want to check your SEO of the site. It quickly shows your meta keywords and description.
  2. MeasureIt - Simply adds a ruler overlay on a webpage. Useful for getting a width and height of content boxes.
  3. Fireshot - Takes full webpage screenshots. There are very few free full website screenshots and even less that are firefox extensions. This actually comes with a full set of image tool. I mostly copy the full webpage directly to my clipboard and then edit in PhotoShop.
  4. ColorZilla - Eyedropper that grabs colors colors from webpages. Also includes a full color browser/picker
